Potty Training

Your puppy was litter box trained starting at three weeks old.  It is accustomed to going in a potty area and not in it play/sleep area.  This makes training your puppy to potty outside easier.  Your new puppy will need to potty very often.  I suggest the following:

  • Taking him out as soon as he eats, when he wakes from a nap, when he is taken out of the crate, early AM, and late PM, and anytime it has been a while since he has been out.

  • When you are not watching your puppy leave it in the crate or small play area.  It is important to "catch" your puppy if it has a potty accident so you can take it outside right away.  If you see your puppy start to squat say “outside” and pick it up and take it outside and then say "go potty" (or whatever term you use).  You should also reward when puppy “goes potty” outside.  If you are using the bell, make sure to help your puppy to ring the bell when you take it out to potty each time.

  • Some puppy parents have been successful with bell training.  For info on bell training watch the video below.

Crate training your pup

Dogs are den animals. A dog den is a safe, enclosed space for a dog to retreat to when they are stressed or need a "home away from home". Dogs may instinctively seek out dens, and they can be especially important for dogs with separation anxiety.  We feel the crate is one of the most important purchases you can make for your new pup.  Crates range in size and price.  We prefer the Digg brand crates.  We have several in The Dood House and not only are they functional, but their muted color blends with the home decor.

Digg Crate

We prefer the Digg crate due to its easy accessibility.  There are two doors and and a lid that open at the top. It comes with a divider so that it grows with your puppy. It is also easy to transport and can be easily folded down. The bottom tray can easily be removed and washed.  We recommend the intermediate crate for both minis and mediums.
